The phrase "In the beginning was the Word" may soon take on a whole new meaning for cellphone users, if work being done by a researcher at South Korea's Sungkyunkwan University pans out.The scientist, Sang-Woo Kim, has been working on converting sound into electricity. Among other things, the technology might harness cellphone users' voices to charge their devices' batteries while they're talking, Woo has speculated. A prototype device he used generated 50 millivolts of electricity from about 100 decibels of sound, The Telegraph reported.

LastPass' Precautionary Move Sets Some Teeth on Edge

LastPass is a password manager. Users rely on it to store the myriad user names and passwords they inevitably collect as they go about their business on the Web. With LastPass, they only have to remember one single master password. LastPass handles the rest -- including, presumably, security. That customer-company relationship was shaken this week when the site realized there were some network traffic anomalies -- that is, unusual levels of data being transferred -- on one of their servers. Possibly it was a hacker attack and if so, possibly data had been transferred including, possibly, stored master passwords.

CEOs Gone Wild: You Can't Make This Stuff Up

This last few weeks has been kind of amazing as I've watched companies like Oracle and Cisco, which are well regarded for brilliant moves, seem to suddenly act as if they were naked and wanted to run with scissors. Then, when I was convinced that I'd seen the worst, Sony decided to piss off the open source crowd and now is likely looking at the death of the PS3 in the U.S. I'm really starting to wonder if a lot of executive managers are trying to get on Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" and not in a good way. Let's talk about corporate foolishness this week.

Heavy-Duty Hard Drive Weeding Machine Drives a Hard Bargain

Hard disk drives have a tendency to fill up with all sorts of useless files. I try to keep up on the small stuff by using the trash often and frequently, but there's always some large files lurking deep within the bowels of your Mac. And inevitably, I look at the bottom of a folder and realize I've got just 10 GB left of my 320 GB hard drive. I could certainly solve the problem, at least temporarily, by buying a new 7,200 RPM 500 GB MacBook SATA drive, but without paying attention, I'll fill that one right up, too.
